With summer now upon us, what better way to hydrate than with coconut water…
Not only does it taste great, but it is a great hydrator from the sun, quenches thirst from alcohol and is full of electrolytes!
Electrolytes are inorganic compounds in our bodies, important for electrical signalling amongst our cells. They are also important for water balance and correcting pH levels and can prevent dehydration.
Other benefits include:
Rich in natural vitamins (especially the B vitamins), necessary for enzymatic reactions in our cells in order for us to function.
Rich in minerals, and trace elements (including zinc, selenium, iodine, sulphur and manganese).
Full of amino acids, organic acids, enzymes, antioxidants and phytonutrients.
Rich in cytokinins, or plant hormones, which have anti-aging, anti-cancer, and anti-thrombolytic effects in humans.
So instead of grabbing that soda or isotonic glucose drink after exercise, try this natural alternative. It’s naturally sweet so doesn’t need added sugar (containing about a fifth of the sugar of other fruit juices), and also contains a little fibre, moderating the sugar absorption anyway.
You could even try adding a pinch of salt to it to give your full range of electrolytes and to mimic a sports drink…
